How do I use sipgate with Starlink?

Using sipgate with Starlink - important notes and settings for VoIP telephony over satellite internet.

Some customers use Starlink as their internet provider abroad. When combined with sipgate, there are a few things to note:

In principle, telephony with sipgate over Starlink works without any problems with Starlink’s standard router or the built-in Wi-Fi router, the Starlink Mini. It does not matter whether you use a business or residential plan. Connections can also be established with IPV6. When setting it up, please make sure that the antenna is not blocked from above by obstacles (for example, branches or canopies).

In the Residential plan of Starlink, however, you should note the following: In the configuration, there is the option to Bypass mode to activate. This mode should be used if you want to use your own router and bypass the Starlink router. This gives your own router a public IP address directly, which helps you avoid double NAT and thus improve the connection over VoIP.

VoIP calls work best when your Starlink connection runs consistently and without errors. You can easily check your connection in the Starlink app under OUTAGES. Short outages in the range of 0.1 seconds to 2 seconds (first tab) are usually unproblematic for real-time applications. It becomes critical, however, with longer outages of 2 seconds or more (second tab), as calls may briefly stutter or fail completely. If it should still happen that calls are sporadically not possible, switching the protocol to TCP can provide a more stable connection.
