# How do I install the sipgate app on Windows?

To install the sipgate app on a Windows desktop, a few prerequisites must be met.

| **Prerequisite** | x86 CPU or 64-bit support (emulator) + allow PowerShell, ARM64 CPU support |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Support**      | Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit)                                                   |

Download the [download file](https://www.sipgate.de/app-download) for the sipgate app from our website. Once the download is complete, copy the file "sipgate.exe" to your computer. Then the installation can be started. It is important to note that installations from a network drive can lead to an error message, so it is recommended to run the file locally on the PC.

Currently there is no way to install the sipgate app in bulk via an .msi file. However, there is the option to create your own .msi file. Various free and pro software solutions are available for this:

* InstallShield
* Advanced Installer
* MSI Factory
* [WiX Toolset](https://wixtoolset.org/)
* [Advanced Installer](https://www.advancedinstaller.com/)
* [NSIS (Nullsoft Scriptable Install System)](https://nsis.sourceforge.io/Main_Page)
* Microsoft Visual Studio Installer Projects
* [Various installer software](https://rbytes.net/software/development_c/install-and-setup_s/)

#### Installation path

During installation, the sipgate app is installed by default in the following directories:

* %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Programs\sipgate-desktop\
  %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\sipgate-desktop

#### Installation on a terminal server

It is possible to install the sipgate app on a terminal server, however this is not intended as the standard configuration. Please note that connecting the audio devices between the desktop and the terminal server is not supported.

#### Set sipgate app as the default app for TEL

If you are using Windows 11, you can set the sipgate app as the default app for the telephone function (TEL) by going to "Default apps" and selecting "Choose defaults by link type" there. Then select "\[Tel: sipgate]\(Tel: sipgate "‌")" as the default.

![WinTEL.png](/files/e0f8500c6916f8d191eb3a5e6596b7fd9b81e0b9)

If you have Windows 10/11 22H2 and the option to select sipgate app as the default app for TEL is not displayed, you can fix the problem as follows:

1\. Quit the sipgate app.\
2\. Delete the "FirstRun" folder at "C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\sipgate-desktop\FirstRun".\
3\. Restart the sipgate app.\
4\. Now sipgate should be selectable as link type "Tel" and can be set as the default app for TEL.

**Alternative: create TEL manually (Win10/11)**\
\- Open Registry Editor: Computer\HKEY\_CLASSES\_ROOT\
\- Create folder: sipgate.tel\
Create subfolder: DefaultIcon (Computer\HKEY\_CLASSES\_ROOT\sipgate CLINQ.tel\DefaultIcon)

Create file: New **➔** String **➔** Value: C:\Users\\**username**\AppData\Local\Programs\sipgate-desktop\sipgate CLINQ.exe\
\&#xNAN;**Replace "username" with your own username**

Create subfolder: shell (Computer\HKEY\_CLASSES\_ROOT\sipgate CLINQ.tel\shell)

New **➔** Create string **➔** Value: is empty

Create sub-subfolder under shell: open (Computer\HKEY\_CLASSES\_ROOT\sipgate CLINQ.tel\shell\open)

New **➔** Create strings, value: is empty

Sub-sub-subfolder: command (Computer\HKEY\_CLASSES\_ROOT\sipgate CLINQ.tel\shell\open\command)

New **➔** Create string, value: "C:\Users\\**username**\AppData\Local\Programs\sipgate-desktop\sipgate CLINQ.exe" "%1"\
\&#xNAN;**Replace "username" with your own username**

#### Enable notifications for sipgate app

To make sure you receive notifications from the sipgate app on Windows 11, follow this path: **Settings ➔ System ➔ Notifications ➔ ON**.\
After you have enabled the general notification feature, you can make specific settings in the sipgate app: Open the sipgate app **➔ Settings ➔ Notifications ➔ ON**.\
To make sure you also receive notifications visually, enable the following setting: **sipgate app settings** **➔ Show notification banners.**

#### How can I correctly set the region/country in the operating system for the sipgate product?

The sipgate app reads the region/country from the operating system, assuming that team DE users have Germany set and team UK users have England set. If another country is set, this can cause problems displaying phone numbers, reachability, and saving contacts.

[**sipgate.de**](http://sipgate.de/)= Germany\
[**sipgate.co.uk**](http://sipgate.co.uk/) = UK\
**Windows 10/11:** Control Panel -> Region: set format to DE or UK

#### Network installation of the sipgate app

We recommend using the app on the web:

[sipgate app](http://workspace.sipgate.com/)\
Users always have the current version and user rights are sufficient.

**Note**:\
There is currently no .msi for a network installation.\
Local administrator rights are required to install or update the sipgate app on Windows.

To avoid manual updates by users, it is recommended to use a software management tool:

* **baramundi**: Use the [software distribution](https://www.baramundi.com/de-de/it-loesungen/softwareverteilung/).
* **installomator**: Use the [GitHub](https://github.com/Installomator/Installomator)-repository to find the current .[yml file](https://desktop.download.sipgate.com/latest.yml) and automatically check for new versions.

#### Errors & solutions

If the installation of the sipgate app on your Windows computer does not work as expected, you can try the following steps as possible solutions:\\

\- Check Windows group policies that could block the installation.\
\- Temporarily disable local software firewall/anti-virus programs.\
\- On Surface Pro X SQ1/SQ2, test a 64-bit emulator.\
\- If an error message appears after logging in, "Reset cache" in the sipgate app help options may help.\
If none of these steps helped, send your sipgate logs together with the error description to support.

<details>

<summary><strong>Error: sipgate app installation/update does not work — "sipgate cannot be closed." and "A javascript error occurred in the main process"</strong></summary>

**Cause:** PowerShell is running in "Constrained Language mode", which blocks running PowerShell scripts.

**Solution:**\
1\. Temporarily adjust the group policy to allow the use of PowerShell in FullLanguage mode.\
2\. Perform the sipgate app installation/update.\
3\. Re-enable the group policy to restore the original state.\
4\. Example: [Constrained Language mode in SRP/GPO](https://4sysops.com/archives/mitigating-powershell-risks-with-constrained-language-mode/) use.

These steps should allow the app installation or update to be carried out successfully, and the error messages should no longer appear. However, note that the group policy should only be adjusted temporarily so that the security settings are not permanently affected.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.sipgate.de/cloud-telefonanlage/en/using-sipgate/die-sipgate-app/wie-installiere-ich-die-sipgate-app-unter-windows.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
