Settings and requirements for using the satellite app

This article lists all the conditions required for smooth use of the satellite app.

1. System requirements

Network

• Minimum connection: EDGE

• satellite runs exclusively over a data connection – regardless of SIM card and mobile operator

Unsupported devices and configurations

• Huawei without Google Services (HarmonyOS, AppGallery without GMS): not supported – only Google-compatible Huawei devices work

• VoIP clients such as Zoiper: for regulatory reasons, satellite cannot be used on third-party VoIP clients

• VPN that blocks UDP traffic or breaks SIP: leads to connection problems

2. Device-side settings (MDM / managed devices)

Android

• Exclude the app from battery optimization (mainly affects Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei)

• For aggressive manufacturers (e.g., Xiaomi MIUI), grant additional background permissions if necessary

• Huawei: Only Google-compatible devices are supported – devices without Google Services (HarmonyOS, AppGallery without GMS) are not compatible

iOS

• Leave push notifications enabled in the system settings

• Minimum OS: iOS 16.4 (due to CallKit integration)

• Recommendation: iOS 18+

General

• Do not use a VPN that blocks UDP traffic or breaks SIP

• Disable SIP-ALG on firewalls and routers

• Minimum network: EDGE – optimal: Wi‑Fi, 4G/5G

3. Battery optimization and power-saving mode

Modern smartphones throttle or terminate background processes automatically to save battery. This directly affects reachability via satellite.

Typical symptoms: incoming calls do not ring even though the app is installed and logged in – especially after a long period of inactivity or when the battery is low.

Important: Power-saving mode (often activated automatically when the battery is low) restricts push notifications and background activity system-wide. satellite should be explicitly exempted from this restriction.

iOS

• Background App Refresh must be enabled for satellite: Settings → General → Background App Refresh → satellite: On

• Low Power Mode disables Background App Refresh system-wide → satellite may no longer be reachable

4. Do Not Disturb (DND) and focus modes

Do Not Disturb (DND) is active by default on many devices – e.g., at night, during meetings, or as a permanent operating state on managed devices. This directly blocks incoming calls.

Android – DND

• Incoming calls are muted or not signaled at all

• satellite can be set as an exception in the DND settings: Settings → Sound → Do Not Disturb → Exceptions → Allow calls from certain apps

• On Samsung devices: Samsung-specific DND settings can override the Android defaults

iOS – Focus modes (DND, Work, Personal, etc.)

• iOS focus modes (since iOS 15) block all calls by default that are not defined as exceptions

• satellite must be explicitly entered as an allowed app in the active focus profiles: Settings → Focus → [Profile] → Apps → add satellite

• Important for MDM environments (e.g., Jamf): satellite must be included in the allowlist of the distributed focus profiles

• the focus mode and DND (do not disturb) should, if possible, be disabled in order to use the satellite app without interruption
